Optimal and Fast Arrangement of Receivers in Passive Multi-transmitters and Multi-receivers Radar by the Receivers' Weighted Distance Average Minimization Algorithm

Passive radar is one of the fields of interest in various industries. These radars detect and locate targets by a certain number of receivers. The designer of this radar utilizes different types of measurements include time difference of arrival (TDOA) and angle of arrival (AOA) which are calculated by the processing of received target's echoes. One of the most important issues in these radars is the location of the receivers. Practical considerations and the efficiency of the algorithms must be considered in the arrangement of the receivers. In this paper, a method for optimal receiver placement is presented. Our method obtains the optimal locations of the receivers by minimizing the weight distance average of the receivers to the set of target locations. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by theoretical analysis and simulations. As shown, the target location estimation efficiency with this method is very close to the optimal arrangement by minimizing the low bandwidth of the target location (CRLB) estimation error. The proposed method has very low complexity and theoretically increases the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of received target echo that means increase detection and localization performances together.
